Period Promise Campaign – United Way of Northern BC
May 31, 2022
The United Way of Northern BC’s Period Promise campaign, presented by LiUNA 1611, kicked off on May 27th for communities across Northern BC. We need your help in reaching our goal of collecting 100,000 menstrual products.
It is a higher goal compared to last year, but with rising inflation hitting people’s bottom lines, more and more families have to choose between buying menstrual products or basic needs like buying a bus pass to get to work, or putting food on the table.
These products’ impact on our community is very personal and very private, and we don’t often know exactly what a difference it makes. But the testimonies we gather show the importance of supporting somebody with a free product.
“I was homeless as a teenager and later, I was a low income single mother. I remember doing everything I could to make my supplies stretch- when I was homeless I would often steal tampons after trying to find some for free. When I was a young, poor single mother, every penny spent was towards my daughter- I would bus for hours to try to find free menstrual supplies. I would use old rags. I would wear a tampon for way, way longer than I should’ve. It was food for my baby or tampons, so I chose food for my baby.” (collected as part of the Period Promise Research Project)
This year’s campaign is running until June 10th, and we need your support to get to this year’s goal and make menstrual products accessible for all.
Please consider making a product donation at your nearest collection site or an online donation and join us in this very important initiative of eradicating period poverty in your local community.
We need your help to end the period poverty in your community. Please take action today by making a product or funding donation. All the donations will stay local to the Northern BC’s community they are donated in.
