Second Chance Thrift Store
Our Store is OPEN Tuesdays and Thursdays 1pm – 4pm and we are accepting donations!
Second Chance Thrift Store was opened in the fall of 2005 by the CMHA Prince George Branch, when they were located at their old location at 555 George Street. The store was tucked in at the front of the office, but quickly grew to include the boardroom, down the hallway and generally taking over the office space. In January 2007, the store was moved into its own space right next door at 551 George Street.
In May 2014, the Second Chance Thrift Store moved again to a bigger location and brighter work area at 1152 – 3rd Ave.
Our store continues to provide low priced previously owned clothing & foot wear, small household goods and used books. Totally relying on the generosity of donations for our goods, we have been fortunate to have wonderful community support with contributions to keep our racks and shelves well stocked.
The primary purpose of Second Chance (aside from great quality at great prices) is to provide a retail training opportunity for people with mental illness. The path to mental wellness often includes re-entering the work force and Second Chance Thrift Store provides that opportunity in safe and supportive environment. All monies are used to provide employment opportunities for individuals living with a mental illness.
In 2013, over 1700 hours of time was devoted to the thrift store, sorting through donations, doing masses of laundry and ironing, pricing, stocking and keeping our customers happy. The gains for the participants included increased skills development, improved retail & social skills, sense of purpose and huge increases in confidence.
We do welcome volunteers in the thrift store, if you are interested in volunteering and helping out please contact our volunteer coordinator by phone at 250-564-8644 or email Grace at gracel@cmhanorthernbc.ca
